Why you decide to do, but you don't follow through.

Image
No follow through - by Tim Wade In March 2018 I received confirmation that I would be delivering nine unique keynotes on a cruise ship in October that year. One of the topics was titled Get Healthier Finally and I figured I had 6 months to shape up before having to deliver that one. Excellent. Six months for me to get healthier finally. That's doable. Except I didn't follow through. Tell the truth Are there some decisions you've made that were awesome decisions, but then you never took any action? I'll tell you the truth: for me there have been a lot. It's almost as if I know what to do, I decide to do it, I might even want to do it, but I don't do it. And it drives me crazy. And it probably drives others crazy too. I'm not exclusively like that. Sometimes I make decisions bordering on impulsive, act immediately, boom: result. My recent trek to Everest is an example of that. (There are pros and cons with that approach as well. Sometimes that sort ...

Your Christmas presence

Image
Zoe playing. I'm on the computer. I'm there but not present. She comes over with things, one time it was something that fell off the table and she wanted to add value to me by giving it back to me... Another time it was so that I could take a sip of her drink. She was trying to bring me in. She's not even two years old. Almost, just over a week from now.  But I saw it, I realised, and I shut the computer and went to engage. I love Christmas. I love it. I love the spirit of this time of year. It's undeniable. Even Ebenezer Scrooge transformed. It's amazing. And the reason for the season is either you believe in God's gift of Jesus Christ, or it's the nearly the end of your year and that will somehow make next year better. For me, I'm both the former AND the latter on this one. Whatever your belief right now, I hope you get your Christmas presence. Not a typo. I noticed that Zoe noticed that I wasn't being present. And isn't that re...

3 Tips to Stop being your own Bottleneck

Image
When did you realise that you're the bottleneck to your own progress? For me, it was when I realised I was buying lots of apps, software and courses to help me progress, but I wasn’t using them. I’d start using them, then ... I’d stop. I knew I needed to write more, create more, produce more, but I wasn’t doing it. And it frustrated me. Notice that your procrastination makes you frustrated You know how you just get busy? You just have to do that other thing. And it's an important other thing. It might be a business thing, a proposal, a team meeting, a review of some of your team’s work so they can move on. You don't want to be the bottleneck.  Who is your bottleneck? For the value I needed to create, I noticed that my bottleneck was me. And when I realised it, it frustrated me. Sometimes it's a simmering frustration, and sometimes the odd burst of anger comes out at something like a spilt coffee. And I have realised that most of the time, I'm ann...

Do the work - the gentle kick in the pants you might need

Image
Tweet Image Have you - in the past of course - been too lazy to be more successful? Or richer or healthier or to get the results you want or whatever? You already know what you need to do. Do the work dude. You know it. Just do it. Get annoyed enough with yourself for not doing it so that you do it. So what do you need to do? The stuff you've been putting off usually. The stuff you avoid. The stuff you make excuses about not being able to do. Fat and don't like running? Start running. But my knee... Walk then... My other knee... Swim. Stop making stupid excuses that blame something else other than your resistance to doing what needs to be done. Albert Gray, an insurance guy in the 1940s said in a famous speech titled The Common Denominator of Success , "The common denominator of success is that successful people form the habit of doing things that failures don't like to do." We all have areas of our life that we could be more successful in. So w...

Two easy ways to increase your awareness

Image
We all have personal rules and standards. They impact our relationships with ourselves, with others and our experience of the world. Most people operate by these unconsciously. To be more conscious of what drives you, you can choose to increase your awareness to notice these drivers. Here are some questions of areas you might want to be aware of, and you might think of others too: how do you get distracted? what triggers heightened states of emotion? (joy, excitement, anger, etc) which sort of people intimidate you, annoy you, scare you, attract you? do you plan goals and follow through with them? which do you avoid? what activities do you do habitually? what food do you consume that you know is not good for you? what makes you smile? and what really makes you laugh out loud? A lot of what we do and how we respond in life is driven by our standards, values and beliefs about the world and people around us, and our beliefs about ourselves. Is it true that without standard...
